ENHANCING EXMOOR

In a series of seminars, walks, talks and visits, tourism businesses are being invited learn more about the National Park and how the National Park Authority works to enhance the qualities that make Exmoor special.  The Exmoor Awareness programme aims to help those in the tourism industry to increase their knowledge of Exmoor’s special qualities and features so that they can further help their visitors to enjoy their stay in the area.

Exmoor National Park Authority has been working on a plan for the future of Exmoor. Starting with a consultation period during which organisations and individuals with an interest in the National Park were consulted, through to the final document, many people have had an input and will help to deliver the targets in the Plan.

How will the Authority help tackle climate change, how can they improve habitats for wildlife, how do they deal with alien invaders, how do they raise awareness of Exmoor’s past? In a series of presentations and site visits, specialists from Exmoor National Park Authority will illustrate how they hope to deal with these questions in the years to come.

Recreation and Access is the subject of the first seminar on Wednesday 6 February to be held at the Pinkery Centre for Outdoor Education near Simonsbath. In a mixed day there will be a chance to meet staff from the Authority’s Access Team and learn about their work and enjoy a brief foray into the mists of Exmoor. In the afternoon there will be a session about the Authority’s educational role and how they aim to inspire Exmoor’s future custodians. As there are outdoor sessions planned for morning and afternoon, warm and waterproof clothing and boots will be required.

The cost for the Recreation and Access seminar is £18 per person, including lunch. Places are limited and prior booking is essential so anyone interested should contact Julie Lovett on 01398 322222.  The seminars, which are held between 10 am and 4 pm, cost £18 each or £30 for all three.

Future seminars include ‘A Future for Exmoor’s Past’ on Wednesday 27 February and ‘Enhancing Exmoor’s Wildlife and Natural Beauty’ on Wednesday 19 March, both to be held at Exmoor House in Dulverton.
