Atlantic Grey Seal
Scientific name: Halichoerus grypus
How to identify: reaching up to 2.3 metres in length, Atlantic grey seals range in colour from grey to silver to brown which is often blotchy. The nostrils are parallel and the ‘Roman’ nose is characteristic especially in the male Atlantic grey seal.
Where: Open sea, rocky islands & coasts; sometimes found on sandy beaches.
Best time to see: All year round although best time to see grey seals and their pups is November to end of January.
Did you know? Atlantic grey seals live for 30-40 years.
