How to identify: Unmistakable, with the velvety black wings intersected by striking red bands and white spots near the tips of forewings. Undersides dark and mottled.

Where: All habitat types and a frequent visitor to gardens especially in the early autumn.

Best time to see: March to September

Did you know?  This is a strong migrant species which returns to us every year from the Mediterranean region, although some red admirals are now hibernating in Britain
