How to identify: The red kite is a striking bird of prey with deep red plumage, a grey head and light eyes. It is recognisable in flight by its long and narrow, black-tipped wings and deeply forked tail.

Where: an unusual sighting on Exmoor, using a wide range of habitats from woodlands and valleys to moorland edge and rough pasture.

Best time to see: all year round

Did you know?  Red kites usually pair for life, building large untidy nests out of sticks in the forks of trees.
