Trees and hedges near public paths

Landowners are responsible for ensuring that trees overhanging or adjacent to a public path do not constitute a hazard to users of the path.  If you are concerned about a tree on your land, you could have the tree inspected by a qualified arboriculturist such as an Arboricultural Association (AA) approved contractor (listed in the yellow pages or on the AA’s web site www.trees.org.uk).  They will be able to give you advice on the health of the tree and whether tree surgery would be appropriate.

The trimming back of overhanging vegetation such as hedges is also the responsibility of landowners although the Authority is sometimes able to undertake this work as a 100% contribution to the landowner's costs.
