Your tourism business and the National Park
"If it wasn't so special it wouldn't be a National Park"

National Parks are special places - there are just 15 in the country and they represent some of the most spectacular landscapes to be found. They really are 'Britain's Breathing Spaces’ and are often rightly referred to as the ‘jewels in the crown’. Whilst over 90% of visitors state the scenery and landscape as a primary factor in visiting Exmoor two thirds also cite the designation of Exmoor as a National Park to be a primary factor for their visit. The information on this page is designed to help you make the most of being based in, or close to, the National Park.

Shout it out and show it!

Being based in a National Park can be real bonus in attracting visitors. National Parks are an iconic, international, brand so make sure you let visitors, and more importantly potential visitors, know that you're based in such an area.  You can link to the National Park website and use photos to demonstrate the wealth of natural beauty found within Exmoor.

However we are blessed with beautiful countryside around us as well and there are many areas that can offer dramatic landscapes so think creatively about how you describe the uniqueness of the area - describe the sights, sounds and emotions connected with enjoying the landscape and make it personal to the reader.

Experience it

There's nothing quite like first hand knowledge. Take some time, when you can, to explore the National Park for yourself. Use the National Park Centres to gain a deeper understanding of the area and to find up to date local information.

Get to know some of the hidden gems as well as the well known honey-pot sites and provide personal information to your guests. Join the annual Exmoor Awareness courses to spend time with National Park staff and other specialists to gain a real insight into the special qualities of the National Park.

Green is growing

Interest in 'green tourism' is growing all the time. Being based in National Park makes it much easier to capitalise on this interest. Exmoor was the first English National Park to gain the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism - invite potential guests to come and see how we did it, and how we're continuing to be a leader in sustainable tourism. However people are becoming more aware of 'greenwash' and so don't just talk about green tourism - but contribute yourself to .

Did you know?

Everyone likes a unique experience, especially when on holiday. Make sure you let visitors know about how special Exmoor National Park is. Exmoor is one of the most tranquil National Parks and offers some of the best star gazing in the country, we're home to the tallest tree in England, and host the highest cliffs in mainland Britain in addition to providing the stomping ground for the largest herds of Red Deer (Britain’s largest wild mammal) in England and home of the famous Exmoor Pony - the oldest breed Europe.

The National Park Authority and tourism promotion

The Exmoor Tourism Parntership and various local tourism organisations like North Devon + lead on promoting Exmoor as a visitor destination through marketing campaigns, business support and promotional activities.  The National Park Authority contributes to marketing programmes with funding and input but does not lead on tourism promotion.
