Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record

The Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record is the most extensive source of information on the archaeological and historic built environment of Exmoor. Whether you want to know about archaeological sites, historic buildings, old photographs or oral histories, the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record is the best place to start.

In the HER are details on archaeological sites and finds, historic buildings and historic landscapes. Designated sites are recorded, which include Scheduled Monuments, Listed Buildings and Historic Parks and Gardens. There are related collections of aerial photography, historic mapping, reports, journals and books on the historic environment of Exmoor.

Thanks to substantial funding from English Heritage in 2008, the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record is being improved, with additional research data and wider availability.

The information is now available online at Heritage Gateway. Search the online records to find out about Exmoor’s past.

The information contained in the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record has been produced from various sources, a substantial part being compiled by both Devon and Somerset County Councils before being transferred to Exmoor National Park Authority in 2009. The Authority acknowledges the work carried out by both County Councils in establishing and maintaining the Historic Environment Records for the National Park.
