Meaning of place name: probably from St Carantacus, the Welsh Saint to whom the church is dedicated. Ham and ton are Saxon names used also in Early English. Ham means a homestead but in the West Country it is often more specific in meaning a homestead on low lying ground near a stream. Ton is a word that developed in meaning from an enclosure around a homestead to a farm to a village and a town.
