Monksilver is a small parish straddling the boundary of the National Park on its eastern edge. The boundary cuts through the middle of the main settlement.

Meaning of place name: monk's wood. The manor was given to the Priory of Goldcliff at Monmouth in the 12th Century. In the Domesday Book it was simply Selvre, from the Latin silva for a wood or it could possibly mean a clear stream.
