Parracombe parish lies entirely within the Devon part of the National Park. The main settelemnt is an amalgamation of hamlets, including Churchtown, Bodley and Prisonford.

Meaning of place name: the old church is dedicated to the Celtic St Petrock and it is suggested that the meaning may be Petrock's valley. It could also come from the Old English pearrocumb, meaning valley with an enclosure.
