Stogumber
Stogumber parish straddles the boundary of the National Park at its eastern extremity. Most of the settlement lies outside of the boundary, with just a couple of farms within. The parish contains several hamlets such as Halsway, Vellow, Vexford, Kingswood, Escott and Preston.

Meaning of place name: The parish was also known as Stoke Gomer. Stoke comes from a Saxon word for church or it may mean a stock as in stockade. It is thought that in Saxon times the manor belonged to a person named Gumner.
