Listed Buildings
Within Exmoor (space) National Park there are over 1000 listed structures. The majority of these structures are private houses. The owners of listed building should be usually know, from searches carried out when they purchased their property, that their house is listed.
The process of listing is carried out on behalf of the DCMS by English Heritage, and is designed to give protection in law to buildings of architectural or historic significance. The purpose of listing is not to prevent any alterations, but to protect a building from ill considered or inappropriate alteration. Owners and occupiers of listed buildings should be aware that being listed covers both the interior and exterior of their buildings. Listed building consent is required for any alteration, demolition or part demolition that affects the character or setting of a listed building. For further information about how to apply for Listed Building Consent pleaseclick here to refer to the planning section.
ENPA are the local planning authority and hold the information about all the listed buildings on Exmoor. The paper copies of the list are still held at ENPA Head Office, and listings are also available from our website.
