Copyright NoticePlans, drawings and material submitted to the Council are protected by the Copyright Acts (Section 47, 1988 Act). You may only use material which is downloaded and/or printed for consultation purposes, to compare current applications with previous schemes and to check whether developments have been completed in accordance with approved plans. Further copies must not be made without the prior permission of the copyright owner.
All planning applications for the development or change of use of land within the National Park are determined by the Exmoor National Park Authority at our offices in Dulverton. Planning laws are there to ensure that the development needs of the National Park communities are met in ways which do not harm the special landscape qualities of Exmoor or the public enjoyment or understanding of those qualities.
The most sensitive or contentious applications are determined by Members of the Authority's Planning Committee which meets each month and receives recommendations from planning officers to assist them in their deliberations. Most applications which are of a minor nature are however, delegated to the National Park Officer for determination (approx 75% of applications).
When a planning application is received, the Authority seeks the views of local residents, the Parish/Town and District Councils and others as appropriate, e.g. the Highway Authorities, Environment Agency, water companies and specialists employed by the National Park Authority such as ecologist, historic buildings officer and landscape officer.

The Authority also has a Planning Monitor Officer whose main task is to monitor developments to ensure that they comply with the terms of any approval given unauthorised breaches of planning control that maybe reported to the Authority are investigated by the Special Duties Officer (Planning Enforcement) who successfully resolves breaches through negotiation without the need for formal enforcement action in most cases.
