What do Rangers do?
- Build and maintain good working relationships with farmers, landowners, tourism providers and local communities, and attend Parish Council meetings, Access groups and interest group meetings
- Working with the Authority's Field Services Team, manage 1005km of public rights of way (footpaths, bridleways and RUPPs) and negotiate permitted routes with landowners
- Enforce rights of way law and encourage the use of the countryside code
- Help implement access elements of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act
- Carry out routine surveys of heavily visited sites and areas subject to erosion
- Assist organisers with recreational events and monitor impacts of these events
- Carry out annual bridge safety inspections and check safety barriers
- Undertake risk assessments and train others to do so
- Provide guided walks and events, give talks and educational activities for schools and the public, and represent the Authority at shows
- Respond to requests for information and advice from students, visitors, the media and tourism industry
- Assist emergency services with local knowledge and expertise, when requested
- Monitor and assist in the removal of animal carcasses
- Respond to out of hours calls to assist the public in various circumstances
- Provide training for volunteers and new staff
- Assist other departments and members with transport and advice for site visits
- Attend internal and external meetings relating to National Park activities
- Carry out controlled burning on moorland on Authority owned land
- Assist with the management of the Exmoor pony herd
- Act as the eyes and ears of the Authority to monitor and maintain the environment
