RIGHTS OF WAY IMPROVEMENT PLAN

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 placed a duty upon Local Authorities to publish a Rights of Way Improvement Plan (RoWIP) by November 2007. The main objective of the RoWIP is to improve public rights of way and access for all.

Exmoor National Park Authority has produced a RoWIP chapter which is contained within the Devon and Somerset County Council’s RoWIP. The Exmoor chapter contains policies and actions that have been developed to improve the way the public rights of way network and access on Exmoor is managed and promoted by the National Park Authority. Each April Exmoor National Park Authority produces an annual action plan to report on progress achieved on RoWIP actions during the previous financial year. The plan also outlines the work planned for the following year.

The National Park Authority has received over 150 suggestions for physical rights of way improvements ranging from the replacement of access furniture to the creation of completely new routes. We are now working with landowners to improve access where possible and have successfully negotiated a number of high priority improvements.

The RoWIP is an ongoing proccess so if you have a suggestion for a rights of way or other access improvement please contact Exmoor National Park Authority Access Officer.
