EXPLORING EXMOOR’S BOUNCING BOGS
A chance to explore Exmoor’s beautiful bogs is on offer on Tuesday 24 June when Dr David Smith, Mire Restoration Project officer, is to lead a 5km guided walk of the Mire Project. The overall aim of the project is to promote the regeneration of moorland and bog vegetation which helps fight global warming by storing more carbon on the moorlands in the form of fresh peat.
Dr Smith said: The route of the walk will be across Exe Head and Blackpitts to look at some beautiful bouncing bogs and the rare plants that live there. I hope people will enjoy learning first hand about the important work that the National Park Authority is doing to preserve Exmoor’s upland mires.”
Anyone wishing to join in should meet at Dure Down car park, north of Simonsbath (grid ref: SS 767410) at 10am on Tuesday 24 June finishing about 3pm. The walk will be on open moorland across very wet and tussocky ground, the ability to walk off paths is essential. Participants should bring a picnic and warm clothing and wear waterproof walking boots. Booking is not required and dogs are welcome on leads.
