Timberscombe Hill Fort opened to the public

On Saturday 13th June Exmoor National Park Authority will be opening up the Iron Age hill fort at Timberscombe to the public as part of the Village Carnival, organised by the Orchards Social Club. The Carnival will include a street parade, country dancing, ‘Danny and the bandits’ and other stalls.

There will be a variety of iron themed activities on the hill fort including local blacksmithing by local ironworker Ben Horrobin, charcoal burning, survival skills, Exmoor ponies from the Moorland-Mousie Trust and an opportunity to explore the Hill Fort with staff from the National Park Authority.

The event will be running from 10am – 4pm, parking is available at the Village Hall and access will be a pleasant half mile stroll up to the Hill Fort.

The West Somerset Mineral Railway Project was awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2007 to conserve and interpret the Mineral Line which was used in Victorian times to transport iron ore from the Brendon Hills to Watchet. Sites which are currently being conserved will be open to the general public this summer.
