Rangers Favourite Walks

Introduction

For the casual walker Exmoor is one of the most attractive of Britain’s National Parks.  There are 625 miles (1005kms) of public footpaths and bridleways and public access is permitted on thousands of acres of moorland and woodland.  It lacks the mountainous heights of some National Parks but this is compensated for by the spectacle of the coast and its gorges and the friendliness and intimacy of the countryside and the relative mildness of climate makes Exmoor suitable for walking throughout the year.

The designation of Exmoor as a National Park does not mean total freedom for the walker, as most of its 267 square miles (692 sq km) are still privately owned and where there is public ownership there is not necessarily open access.  However, the National Park Authority has had considerable success in improving access and facilities for walkers and there is probably no comparable part of the country with such a well maintained network of trails.
