The land falls away sharply to the north of The Chains, with steep sided valleys, known as “combes”. With the soil already waterlogged, the continuing rains poured down the combes and into the East and West Lyn Rivers. As the darkness fell on the evening of the 15th August, the rivers had risen to dangerous levels.
