The National Park is not a ‘natural’ landscape. It is a living, dynamic and working environment. For thousands of years, people have lived and worked on Exmoor. They have left behind fascinating glimpses of past lives and cultures and the natural and cultural heritage that we value as special today. We are learning more and more from archaeological sites and exciting excavations.

Working with others, the National park Authority helps look after wildlife, landscapes, moorland and buildings and settlements.

To keep it special requires this active ‘management’ – someone doing something. The National Park Authority has a range of services to help achieve this and works with and through communities, partners and other organisations to pursue National Park purposes.

We also want you to enjoy these special qualities by making sure there is good access, (on footpaths, bridleways and open country), to the delights on offer for you to discover and explore.
