We have a great range of events you can book on to find out more about Exmoor's wildlife. From introductory "discover" events to specific survey training we welcome everyone to Get involved.

Exmoor is nationally renowned for its beautiful and diverse lichens with names such as tree lungwort and string-of-sausages. Come and discover how to identify some of the lichens common in Exmoor’s woodlands.

Come and find out what makes Exmoor such a special place and why it is a National Park. This 2 hour session will start with a quick presentation looking at some of Exmoor's wildlife, history and landscapes, followed by a shortish walk to have a look.

Lynmouth National Park Centre
Exmoor’s Atlantic woodlands are home to around 19 species of fern - join us on a walk at Tarr Steps to discover more about them. Learn about the parts of a fern, understand how to identify them using an Atlantic woodland fern ID guide and become confident in identifying some of them. Aimed at beginners.

Come and learn about the invasive species that are we are working to control on Exmoor and why. We’ll look for Signal Crayfish, Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam. We’ll also learn about some of our native wildlife and what you can do to help.

Join the Exmoor Mires Partnership for a session focusing on the basics of botanical identification of mire plants. Learn how to split plants into broad groups & identify some of the more showy species likely to be encountered on Exmoor. Aimed at building confidence in those with little or no previous experience of botanical identification.
Pinkery Centre for Outdoor Learning
Join the Exmoor Mires Partnership for a session building on the botanical ID skills learnt in Part One (28/05/2019). This time we will focus on getting to grips with the basics of what are often considered some of the more ‘difficult’ plants: grasses, rushes, and sedges.

Join Megan Lowe (Butterfly Conservation) and Paul Camp (National Trust - Holnicote Estate) on a walk around the National Trust's Halse Combe to view the Heath Fritillary butterfly.This is a great opportunity to learn about its life cycle and habitat requirements and the work that is happening on Exmoor to restore its fortunes.

Join an Exmoor National Park expert for a night walk around Wimbleball Lake in search of Glow Worms and other nocturnal wildlife. There will be opportunities to carry out further Glow Worm surveys around the National Park after this event
Bessom Cross car park (SS974318)
Join the Exmoor National Park Authority’s Woodlands Team to discover how they manage one of Exmoor’s most special woodlands. You'll also get the opportunity to learn how to identify some of the most common trees species you encounter along the way.
Hawkcombe Woods car park (SS861460)
Join the Bumblebee Conservation Trust at the National Trust's Kipscombe Farm and learn how to identify some of the common bumblebee species found on Exmoor. The day comprises an indoor workshop in the morning followed by fieldwork in the afternoon.
Kipscombe Farm, Countisbury
Join Seawatch Foundation for National Whale and Dolphin Watch Week to learn more about identifying dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) and other marine mammals which visit Exmoor’s coast. The training aims to equip volunteers with skills to conduct their own surveys to help Seawatch contribute to knowledge on Exmoor’s marine environment.

Join a local expert from the British Dragonfly Society to learn the principles of dragonfly identification and field survey techniques. The day will consist of an indoor session in the morning, followed by outdoor fieldwork in the afternoon.

Join an Exmoor National Park fungi expert for a 1.5 mile gentle walk around Tarr Steps woods. We will look at fungi life cycles, growing patterns and which ones we can eat.

Come and learn more about the fungi of Exmoor's grasslands such as Waxcaps, and Puff Balls. There will be a beginner’s session and walk around the grounds of the Field Studies Council's Nettlecombe Court in the morning, followed by classroom ID session in the afternoon. Bring a packed lunch and suitable outdoor clothing.
