Minehead Grand Prix

Date: 22nd Jun 2019 3:00pm - 23rd Jun 2019 6:00pm
Press Release – Minehead Grand Prix 2019 National Youth Championship event comes to town Following the success of the town centre cycle racing in June, the event in 2019 will now form part of the National Series Championships. British Cycling has invited Minehead Cycling Club (MCC) to host the event for Youth A and B competitions, for both girls and boys, meaning an 4 additional races featuring the cream of young talent from across the UK. The event takes place over the weekend of 22/23rd June with the National races running from late afternoon and into the evening, followed by the usual package of Southwest Region events on the Sunday. It’s expected that each boys’ race will attract full fields of 80 riders, with 40 for each of the girls’ events. Cycling Club member and Race Director Paul Butcher explained “We expect many of the National riders will stay for the weekend and race in the Southwest Regional races the following day, so it promises to be a weekend full of top-quality competition, great atmosphere and excitement. Sports fans will know that it was an event like this which set Wales’ Geraint Thomas on the road to becoming a multiple World Champion and Olympic Gold medalist, and then to winning the world’s biggest and most famous cycle race, the Tour de France.” Club Chairman Neil Arnold said, “It’s a huge privilege to be asked to stage such a prestigious event. In the last 10 years, cycling has become possibly the UK’s most high-achieving sport, so to be part of a national series is a fantastic accolade for the town and the club. Having promoted a number of successful and widely-acclaimed events in recent years, including the Tanks Direct Porlock Hill Climb, the Stella Farrell road races, and countless mountain-bike and cyclo-cross events run by the Merlins, the club is now regarded as one of the main players on the national cycling scene.” Race Organiser Paul Butcher added “This is beyond our wildest dreams and places the Minehead Grand Prix up there among the top events in the country. But it is just reward for the club, the town and the wider area. The event has received unbelievable support from the Minehead Events Group, the Town Council and the local business community, as well as a small army of volunteers from Minehead Cycling Club/Merlins and others. National status for the event guarantees an extra 200-plus riders just for the Youth Races, with a likely increase in entries from seniors as a result. That’s 200 more families spending a weekend in local B & B’s, guest houses and campsites, so we hope everyone will see some benefits from the event.” More details will appear on the event website shortly but in the meantime please email for further information. 36684887_2107382082842320_2702966074927742976_o.jpg ENDS
