Darkling: The Owl’s Song
We are delighted that Catherine is returning to Seven Fables this September to celebrate the publication of Darkling: The Owl’s Song. This much anticipated title follows in the footsteps of her much-loved previous books, The Bee and the Sun, and The Moon and the Hare.
Catherine describes the paintings created for Darkling as night poems - exploring the transition of dusk into night as the light sinks and colour drains into darkness. With moonrise the woodland is transformed into another landscape of contrast and pattern where uncertain shadows suggest deeper spaces.
Catherine’s signature animals hare, barn owl and deer are joined by rook, fox, otter and badger and most particularly by the tawny owl who sits and watches, who sits and listens, and calls twilight to him.
Catherine will be reading, painting, signing books and chatting ‘in the kitchen’ at Seven fables throughout the day, do join us.
Dulverton by Starlight
Every December the pretty Exmoor town of Dulverton is decorated with Christmas trees festooned with lights, and for one Sunday many of the shops are open for people to do some local Christmas shopping. Festivities take place all afternoon and into the evening, including street entertainers, live music, festive stalls and a fabulous fireworks display to conclude the evening! Don’t miss this traditional, festive occasion – marking the beginning of Christmas every year in Dulverton, Exmoor.
Dunster by Candlelight Break
Stay in Dunster for this very special weekend where Dunster steps back in time, the streets are closed to traffic, the village lit by candlelight with shops open late, a candlelit parade, street entertainers, carol singing, brass bands, morris dancers and much more! The entertainment takes place on the Friday and Saturday evenings. 3 nights Bed and Breakfast break £300 per person for 2 people sharing a room and dinner on one night included.
Morebath Christmas Craft Fair
The third edition of this popular artisan Christmas Craft Fair, where you can expect every stall to be selling a unique product range, crafted locally by themselves. You’ll find excellent quality and many gift ideas, including real ales, chocolate, dog apparel, ceramics, preserves, art, jewellery, fudge, cocktails, soaps, cider and more. You won’t go hungry either as there will once again be fabulous street food available throughout the evening. Mulled wine will be on offer, with the fabulous Tombola, profits of which are donated to a local charity. Come and enjoy the festive vibe.
Free entry, all welcome, dog friendly, wheelchair accessible venue. Tea/coffee/soft drinks available.
Christmas break in Dunster
Enjoy a traditional Christmas in the medieval village of Dunster. The Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster, based within Exmoor National Park is hosting a Christmas break on a full board basis, including a traditional Christmas lunch and gala dinners. Also during the break there is a programme of quizzes and activities, or simply relax and enjoy a stroll around the medieval village and see the shops windows decorated for Christmas, or take a longer walk on any of the well waymarked footpaths leading from the village.

New Year Jazz Break with the Riviera Ramblers
The Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster, based within Exmoor National Park, is hosting a 3 night break over the New Year with fantastic entertainment each evening after dinner from veteran trumpeter John Shillito and his band the Riviera Ramblers. Our jazz breaks with John are a well established feature with Yarn Market Hotel guests and jazz aficionados from all over the UK and beyond. The South Devon band comprises six excellent musicians steeped in the nostalgic sounds of classic jazz and swing, and with 2 guitars, adds an additional “gypsy jazz” flavour, with echoes of New Orleans, Harlem and Paris.
