Summer Stories in the Wilds @ Wellington Library

Stories in the Wilds at Wellington Library - Summer edition!
This is a fun, story-generating workshop with Wiveliscombe children’s author Emma Bettridge and her nice dog Nell. During the workshop, we will go for a walk around the Basins in Wellington, and then gather to write, draw and use dictaphones to record our stories and ideas. Feel free to bring a favourite story and Emma will read them at the end. It is a relaxed, interesting and inspiring workshop for children ages 5+.
Please note that the workshop involves Nell the dog – a very friendly Labrador x Golden Retriever so please don’t bring any animals of your own with you on the walk, thank you (Nell will get distracted, as will Emma).
There will be opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Emma’s books, Goodbye Hobbs, Red is Home & The Ranch at the End of the World.
Suitable for ages 5+

A 2h-2.5hr/4 mile guided walk, exploring the hills and landscape that surround the historical village of Dunster.

Join a guided walk leader and explore the picturesque landscape around Dunster.

A 2- 2.5hr/4 mile guided walk, taking in the historical sites of Dunster village and the breathtaking views above the village from the ancient hillforts of Grabbist Hill and Bat’s Castle.

Accessibility: The walk route includes some steep inclines, over uneven ground. A moderate level of fitness is required.

Please ensure you wear suitable outdoor clothing and walking boots.

Dogs on short leads allowed.

Booking recommended. Walk starts at the National Park Centre Dunster.

The Lost Picturesque Landscape of Ada Lovelace

Join Walk Leader Graham McVittie from the ENPA to discover the lost picturesque landscape of Ada Lovelace.
Graeme is Senior Woodland Officer for Exmoor National Park Authority involved in the management of ENPA woodland including Culbone for over 25 years. Graeme is a forester rather than a Landscape Manager or ecologist so brings a practical management perspective to the recovery and conservation of this fascinating place.
Following the SW Coast Path from Ashley Combe Lodge to Culbone Church we will explore the surviving features of the extensive picturesque landscape laid out by the mathematician and her husband Willam Lovelace in the 19th Century. We will look at some of the work by Exmoor National Park and volunteers to reveal some of the surviving features and the ecology and management of the woodland.

Hope Bourne Guided Walk in Withypool

Join us for a wonderful guided walk following the footsteps of novelist and artist Hope Bourne. Explore the Withypool area taking in some of Hope’s favourite views whilst learning more about her incredible life here on Exmoor.
Walk leader Lisa Eden, an Exmoor Society Trustee, oversees the archive and works closely with the Hope Bourne collection and will share some fascinating stories about Hope.
This is a moderate walk with some rough parts underfoot, and steep in places. Possible extension on to Withypool Hill if the weather and time allows. Followed by optional refreshments in Withypool tea rooms or the Royal Oak pub.
– Dogs are most welcome on a lead
– Children welcome (care needed on road section)

Join Walk Leader Steve Key for a guided walk through Larkbarrow and Three Combes Foot.
Steve is a retired Accountant who now spends time on his hobbies including, Astronomy, Exmoor, Geology, Golf, History, Photography & World Affairs. This is his 49th year walking Exmoor. He has several voluntary roles working for ENPA and South West Peatland Partnership.
You will walk north to Three Combes Foot, then along to Kittuck Barrow and Stowford Bottom before heading south to Larkbarrow ruins and back to the lay by.

Accessibility: The walk route includes some gentle inclines around the village lanes and passes over some uneven ground towards the end of the route. Seven Fables and The Exmoor Society present an evening with historical archaeologist Eloise Kane, the author of Wilderlands, The Human History of Wild Britain - Wainwright Prize Longlist 2026
When was Britain last truly wild? And what, if anything, remains? This is the unexpectedly human history of wild Britain.
In Wilderlands, archaeologist Eloise Kane unearths 12,000 years of our changing relationship with and influence on the landscape. Through prehistory, Roman occupation, the Middle Ages and beyond, we see the unfamiliar beasts of our old wild make way for species such as brown hare and fallow deer, now romanticised as eternal symbols of the British countryside, but introduced much later than we might think.
Places free from our influence haven’t existed for a very long time. But Eloise Kane invites us to rethink our definition of the wild – not as separate from us. Seen anew as the result of millions of human lives lived, Wilderlands demonstrates how we are integral to the ecology and biodiversity of our land - with the power to shape its future.
