Can you spot the knitted bees and colourful blossoms hiding in the nooks and crannies of Dunster Castle? Step through ancient doorways, peer around cosy fireplaces and look high and low as you follow the trail through the castle’s historic rooms. Each hidden creation brings a burst of colour and a reminder of the busy world of nature just beyond the castle walls. This indoor trail invites families to explore together, spark curiosity and discover how bees and blossoms play their part in the changing seasons. Daily from 16-22nd May, 2026 This self‑led trail is designed to guide you around some of the rare, unusual, and historically significant trees that help make Dunster Castle & Gardens such a special place. Pick up your free trail map from the Visitor Reception building, then set off at your own pace. Perfect for families, nature‑lovers, and curious wanderers alike, this gentle trail invites you to slow down, look up, and see Dunster Castle from a fresh perspective. Normal admission applies to non-members. Join the walking team at the Lorna Doone Valley on a two-hour guided walk around the Doone Valley and surrounding Exmoor Landscape. Each walk will take in amazing views of the vast and diverse landscape of the Doone Valley and Exmoor. Along the way you may be lucky enough to spot Exmoor ponies, deer and a variety of different birds. Along with fantastic wildlife the valley is home to array of different wildflower and ancient trees. We will return to The Buttery café in time for lunch. Celebrate the Exmoor Nature Festival with us at Calvert Devon for a welcoming wildlife and orienteering walk around beautiful Wistlandpound Reservoir. Discover local habitats, spot seasonal wildlife and learn simple navigation skills as we explore the reservoir together. This relaxed, guided session is perfect for curious minds of all ages — whether you’re new to orienteering or simply love being outdoors. After the walk, join us in our Wild Activity Garden for an engaging nature talk, where we’ll share insights about Exmoor’s landscape and the species that call it home. The event is fully accessible, with step-free routes and inclusive facilities, so everyone can enjoy time in nature together. £11 per adult Fresh air, fascinating wildlife and adventure without limits — come and explore with us. A nine mile walk visiting Withypool Hill, Tudball’s Splats, Worth, Parsonage Farm, Tarr Steps, and then returning using the Two Moors Way beside the River Barle. A walk full of contrasts, with an ascent which will provide extensive views of Exmoor, followed by a beautiful riverside walk through sections of lovely woodlands. Join the Exmoor National Park Team for a free, pop up nature and wildlife activities day. Fun for all the family. No need to book. Donations to CareMoor. Join ecologist and author Flemming Ulf-Hansen as he shares his wealth of knowledge about Exmoor and its position as one of the three moorlands in southern England, its peatlands and coastal habitats. Special too are some of the largest ancient oakwoods (our own temperate rainforests) in southern Britain and he will champion the relatively unappreciated coastal woods and wildlife. Exmoor’s special habitats and species are celebrated in a new book which was published by HarperCollins in April 2025 and will be available to buy after the talk. Join Exmoor farmers Chris and Victoria ('Tortie') Eveleigh for a slow ramble around the easily accessible fields of their farm (about a mile) and then a tractor and trailer ride in a purpose-built tours trailer to the furthest part of the farm for a picnic lunch with a panoramic view, followed by a tractor-drawn tour of the cows and calves plus ewes and lambs in the fields. Beautiful views and abundant wildlife - typically including wild red deer. W3W paddocks.master.thinker A guided walk onto a secluded beach where there is a hidden sea pool only revealed at low tide. Those brave enough to immerse themselves in the pool may find themselves swimming with rock pool creatures, observed by gulls, or possibly dolphins. Led by Somerset artists InkJam, the session invites participants to create printed artworks that reflect the landscapes and wildlife of Exmoor you are invited to “Capture Exmoor in a Carton,” combining creativity and sustainability by reusing materials such as Tetra Pak cartons to make printing plates capturing the essence of Exmoor through drawing of wildlife and landscapes. You will learn to print from the plates using the Intaglio method and introducing chine collé to add colour, texture, and recycled elements to your prints. There will also be opportunities to explore techniques such as cyanotype and silk-screen printing. The workshop celebrates the legacy of Hope Bourne (1918–2010), a respected artist, writer, and creator who lived off-grid on Exmoor for much of her life. Bourne’s work focused on the natural beauty of the area, and she produced thousands of drawings and paintings. She also wrote and illustrated seven books and contributed a weekly column to the West Somerset Free Press. FREE event but booking required. Step off the map into a hidden Exmoor valley for a playful, elemental gathering in nature. Beginning in a truly wild meadow surrounded by ancient woodland, we join for a grounding and dynamic outdoor yoga session. From field to forest, we then move beneath moss covered trees to a clear woodland plunge pool carved by flowing water. Nature's own jacuzzi. Meet mountain leaders Nick and Unity for a guided hike with of around 2 hours along old drovers ways, across fields and into hidden ancient wooded valleys. We will have time to breathe, to watch and observe Spring unfurling, embrace the sights and sounds of the awakening moor. On the way we will pause for lunch and a drink before returning to East Liscombe Farm. Here the sauna awaits, to ease tired muscles and melt away tensions. A plunge bath or cold shower is available to cool off between sauna steamings, but there is also a natural jacuzzi stream a few metres away. This is a fun, story-generating workshop with Somerset children’s author Emma Bettridge and her dog Nell. During the workshop, we will go for a walk to Burridge Wood where we will gather to write and use dictaphones to record stories and ideas. It is a relaxed, interesting and inspiring workshop for children aged 5-12 years. Please note that the workshop involves Nell the dog – a very friendly and lovely Labrador x Golden Retriever (please don’t bring any animals of your own with you on the walk, thank you). Flower Press and Print Inspired by Hope Bourne’s life and work, the South West Heritage Trust are running family-friendly activities, creating printed artworks inspired by the landscape and the natural world. Join Somerset artists InkJam for a relaxed and creative family-friendly printmaking workshop inspired by Exmoor artist Hope Bourne and using everyday discarded materials as she often did. We’ll discover how simple materials can be transformed into beautiful artworks. Together we’ll explore flowers and foliage through observational drawing, before transferring our sketches to our printing plates, made from recycled card and tetrapak cartons. We will experiment with markmaking, etching tools and cut out shapes ready for printing. We can layer colour inks, inspired by the rich tones of the Exmoor landscape, before printing using our large relief press. This playful hands-on session encourages curiosity, creativity and sustainability- perfect for families who enjoy making art together. Foliage Forest Inspired by Hope Bourne’s life and work, the South West Heritage Trust are running family friendly activities, where visitors can create printed artworks inspired by the landscape and the natural world. Join Somerset artists InkJam and embrace a wild and free approach to creating an illustration. Print layers of foliage to build up a foliage forest and capture the essence of an Exmoor scene. Using black paper, the colourful or simple white prints will create a backdrop where landscapes and farmsteads grow, and wildlife and local characters can appear with the addition of collage or drawing. The black paper also lends itself to a night scene where you can add the stars as they are seen in Exmoor. You will also have the opportunity to try other creative printing techniques, including silk-screen printing and Cyanotype printing. As part of our Nature Festival join Exmoor National Park Rangers in the rockpools of Lynmouth. Together we will search for chitons, crabs, sea anemones and find out more about the amazing wildlife that lives on the seashore. The rockpooling site is very exposed so please dress for the weather. Water shoes or wellies encouraged. Nets, buckets and knowledge provided. Attendance is free but if you would like to donate to CareMoor you can do so at Lynmouth National Park Centre opposite. The annual Porlock Open Gardens event, where community and visitors come together to share their love of gardening and gardens which are not usually open to the public. The Exmoor Society Big Nature Day is back! We’re delighted to announce the return of The Exmoor Society Big Nature Day, a joyful celebration of everything that makes Exmoor so special, from the stunning landscapes to the wonderful wildlife. Join us at beautiful Nettlecombe Court on Sunday 31st May 2026, from 10 am to 4 pm, for an unforgettable day of discovery, creativity and connection with nature. Perfect for the whole family, the Exmoor Society’s Big Nature Day offers a packed programme of hands-on creative workshops, guided nature walks, live performances, delicious food, inspiring stalls, interactive arts and fascinating talks from some of Britain’s best-known environmentalists. A key theme for the day is “nature for all” and the day will highlight both how important nature is to us, and we are to it, for people from all communities and regions to visit, explore and feel at home in the natural world. There is something for everyone, with an exciting mix of national and local organisations ready to spark curiosity and inspire a deeper love of nature. Already confirmed are the National Trust, Exmoor National Park Authority, Butterfly Conservation, and local gems including Plastic Free Exmoor, Our Precious Earth, Horner Farm and Good Vibe Veg – with many more to be announced!
